Units: the part that quietly gets results wrong
The same result is printed in different units depending on where the laboratory is. An LDL of 4.0 mmol/L is 155 mg/dL — clearly high — but read as if it were mg/dL it looks perfectly normal. Nothing about that failure is visible: you get a number, a colour and a reassuring sentence.
So the value is converted before it is compared, and the original is kept on screen next to it so you can still recognise your own report. And when a unit is written that we do not recognise, the parameter is shown as unclassified — an answer we cannot stand behind is worse than no answer.
