What it is
Combination skin shines in the T-zone — forehead, nose and chin — and is normal or slightly dry on the cheeks. Normal skin has no marked problems. For both the goal is maintenance: cleanse without drying, moisturise with a light texture and protect from the sun every day.
It is the skin type where it is easiest to overload the routine. If there is no specific problem, an active is not needed: daily sun protection is, by far, what does most for it in the long run.
What it needs
Three things:
- Cleansing that removes T-zone oil without leaving the cheeks tight
- A light moisturiser, gel-cream or fluid, that does not add shine
- Daily sun protection; an antioxidant in the morning or a gentle retinoid at night is optional
At the counter
When to recommend it
- People who want a simple routine to maintain their skin
- Shine only in the T-zone, with normal cheeks
- Someone starting a skincare routine who does not know where to begin
- As a base to which one specific active can be added later
When not to
- With frequent inflamed spots: see the acne-prone skin routine
- With persistent redness on the cheeks and nose: see the redness routine
- If the whole face feels tight and flakes: see the dry skin routine
- Retinol in pregnancy or when trying to conceive
Warnings
- Important Retinol, if used, increases sun sensitivity: daily sunscreen while using it.
- Important Retinol: avoid in pregnancy and when trying to conceive.
- Caution Very harsh cleansers or daily exfoliation dry the cheeks and make the T-zone produce more shine.
- Caution If inflamed spots appear often, the skin is no longer simply "combination": the routine needs reviewing.
- Worth knowing A richer cream only on the cheeks is a valid approach for combination skin.
The routine, step by step
Morning
- Cleanse. Gentle gel or foamRemoves overnight oil without drying the cheeks.
- Moisturise. Gel-cream or light fluidHydrates without adding shine to the T-zone.
- Sunscreen. Broad spectrum, SPF 30 or higher, fluid textureIt is what most prevents pigmentation and ageing in the long run.
Evening
- Cleanse. The same gentle cleanserRemoves sunscreen, dirt and make-up.
- Active (optional). Niacinamide, or low-strength retinol two or three nights a weekOnly if there is something to improve: pores, texture or first lines.
- Moisturise. The same light creamIf the cheeks feel tight, a slightly richer one just there.
Combination skin vs oily skin
| Aspect | Combination | Oily |
|---|---|---|
| Where it shines | T-zone only | The whole face |
| Cheeks | Normal or slightly dry | Oily too |
| Moisturiser texture | Gel-cream | Very light gel or fluid |
| Most useful active | Optional | Niacinamide or salicylic acid |
| Main risk | Drying the cheeks | Blackheads and visible pores |
Combination skin needs balance by zone; oily skin needs oil control over the whole face.
Self-assessment
Three questions. When you check your answers you will see the explanation for each one.
-
It prevents pigmentation and ageing. The rest is optional when there is no specific problem.
-
Over-drying usually worsens the balance rather than improving it.
-
If there is nothing to treat, the basic routine is enough.
