What it is
Niacinamide is the topical form of vitamin B3. Its great virtue is tolerance: it suits almost every skin type and combines with practically every active.
It helps regulate sebum, improves barrier function and reduces redness. Its effects are real but subtle, and they show with consistency. It is the active to turn to with confidence when it is unclear what to recommend.
Three actions with evidence
What it does in the skin:
- REGULATES SEBUM: it reduces production without drying.
- IMPROVES THE BARRIER: it increases the synthesis of stratum corneum lipids; useful for damaged skin.
- ANTI-INFLAMMATORY: it reduces redness; useful for reactive skin.
At the counter
When to recommend it
- Almost any skin type
- Oily skin: sebum control without the irritation of an exfoliant
- Sensitive skin: it soothes and improves the barrier
- Mild acne: it reduces inflammation
- Combinations: compatible with most actives
When not to
- Few: if it irritates at a high concentration, drop to 2–5%
Warnings
- Important MYTH: 'niacinamide and vitamin C cancel each other out'. FALSE: they can be used together.
- Caution CONCENTRATION: 5% is usually enough. More adds no benefit and can irritate sensitive skin.
- Worth knowing SUBTLE EFFECT: it is not spectacular. Consistency matters more.
Pharmacokinetics
- Absorption
- It is absorbed well from different vehicles and does not need a particular pH.
- Distribution
- Effective concentration: 2–5% in most studies; many products use 4–10%. More is not usually better.
- Metabolism
- Well tolerated; at high concentrations it can cause some flushing or itching on sensitive skin.
- Elimination
- Its effect builds up: sebum control shows after 2–4 weeks of use.
Niacinamide vs salicylic acid for sebum
| Aspect | Niacinamide | Salicylic acid |
|---|---|---|
| Sebum control | Good and gentle | Very good, more aggressive |
| Irritation | Minimal | Moderate |
| For any skin | Yes | No |
| Barrier | Improves it | Can damage it if overused |
| Pregnancy | Considered compatible | Low concentration and small areas |
| Combinations | Compatible with almost everything | Best introduced on its own |
Niacinamide is the gentle option for sebum and sensitive skin; salicylic acid the most effective for pores and comedones when the skin tolerates it. They can be combined.
Self-assessment
Three questions. When you check your answers you will see the explanation for each one.
-
It is an old myth based on laboratory conditions that do not happen in a routine. They can be used together.
-
Most studies use 2–5%. Going much higher adds no benefit and increases the chance of irritation.
-
It is one of the most universal actives. If it irritates at a high concentration, the concentration is lowered.
