What it is
Hyaluronic acid attracts and holds water. MYTH: that it penetrates the skin and hydrates 'from within'. REALITY: it works in the most superficial layers and performs better when there is moisture. In very dry environments, with nothing on top, it can leave the skin feeling tight.
With the right expectations it is excellent. With the wrong ones, it disappoints.
How it works (and how it does not)
It is hygroscopic: it draws water from the air. The ENVIRONMENT matters a LOT:
- Humid climate (coast, rain): it draws water from the air and holds it in the skin. Excellent.
- Very dry environment (central heating): there is little moisture to capture. Without an occlusive on top, the water it holds evaporates and the skin can feel tight.
- It NEVER penetrates the epidermis: its molecular weight is very high. It only hydrates the stratum corneum.
- A 'moisture support', not a deep moisturiser. It needs an occlusive to seal it in.
At the counter
When to recommend it
- Humid climates or coastal areas.
- As a HYDRATION LAYER, never the only step.
- Under an occlusive: hyaluronic → cream.
- Combined with other humectants.
When not to
- VERY DRY climates without a strong occlusive.
- Not as a 'deep moisturiser' that reaches the dermis.
- Not without mentioning the OCCLUSIVE it needs.
Warnings
- Important 'Hyaluronic dries my skin out': it can happen in very dry environments if it is applied to dry skin with no cream on top.
- Important APPLICATION: on slightly damp skin and sealed with a cream. That is how it really works.
- Caution MOLECULAR WEIGHT: advertising sells 'low weight' as better. Not always: each size does something different.
- Caution CONCENTRATION: more is not always better; above a certain point it can leave a tight feeling.
Pharmacokinetics
- Absorption
- Molecular weight: low weight penetrates more; high weight holds water better.
- Distribution
- Applying it to SLIGHTLY DAMP skin increases the effect.
- Metabolism
- It works physically, not biochemically.
- Elimination
- It needs an occlusive (cream) so the water does not evaporate.
Hyaluronic acid in different climates
| Aspect | Humid climate | Dry climate (indoors in winter) |
|---|---|---|
| Effectiveness | Excellent | Mediocre without a strong occlusive |
| Feel | Plump skin | Possible dryness |
| Occlusive | Recommended | ESSENTIAL |
| Example | Coast → hyaluronic + light moisturiser | Winter → hyaluronic + rich cream + oil |
Hyaluronic acid is not the problem: applying it without considering the environment and without sealing it is.
Self-assessment
Three questions. When you check your answers you will see the explanation for each one.
-
In dry environments, without a cream to seal it, the water hyaluronic acid holds on the surface evaporates, and the skin can feel tight.
-
The occlusive seals in the moisture the hyaluronic acid has captured.
-
Its molecular weight is very high. It only hydrates the surface.
