What it is
Biotin (vitamin B7 or B8) takes part in energy metabolism and has authorised EU claims: it contributes to normal maintenance of hair, skin and mucous membranes, and to normal nervous system function. It is sold alone and in many "hair and nails" complexes.
A normal diet covers it, and deficiency is rare. What matters at the counter is something else: at high doses it can distort many blood tests.
What it does
It is a cofactor for enzymes in fat, carbohydrate and amino acid metabolism:
- Deficiency (very rare) is linked to hair loss, brittle nails and skin problems.
- In people without a deficiency there is no solid evidence that more biotin gives more hair.
- The body eliminates the excess in urine.
At the counter
When to recommend it
- Normal nutrition doses, never above the label
- When there is a real deficiency assessed by their doctor
- As part of a varied diet, without expecting miracles
When not to
- Before a blood test: warn and ask whether to stop for a few days
- Pregnancy: use only normal nutrition doses
- Megadoses without reason: they add nothing
Warnings
- Important BLOOD TESTS: high-dose biotin can interfere with laboratory methods and give false troponin, thyroid hormone and other values. Health authorities have warned about it.
- Caution No solid evidence of benefit in people without a deficiency: do not promise results on hair or nails.
- Worth knowing "Hair" complexes often contain doses far above those of the diet.
Pharmacokinetics
- Absorption
- Good by mouth.
- Distribution
- Spreads through tissues.
- Metabolism
- Used as a cofactor and partly broken down.
- Elimination
- The excess in urine.
Dietary dose and megadose
| Aspect | Nutrition dose | Megadose |
|---|---|---|
| Amount | A few micrograms | Thousands of micrograms (mg) |
| Proven usefulness | Covers the need | Adds nothing without a deficiency |
| Effect on tests | Minimal | Can distort results |
| What to do | No problem | Warn before testing |
What matters most about biotin is the warning, not the dose.
Self-assessment
Three questions. When you check your answers you will see the explanation for each one.
-
It can distort laboratory values such as troponin or thyroid hormones.
-
So the results are interpreted correctly.
-
There is no solid evidence of benefit in people without a deficiency.
