Frequently asked questions
Can I run while taking ibuprofen?
Occasionally, for acute pain after the effort, it is reasonable. Do NOT take ibuprofen before long-distance running or endurance cycling in the heat — there is a real risk of acute kidney failure and rhabdomyolysis. Prefer paracetamol for pain before or during exercise.
Can I train while I am on antibiotics?
It depends on the antibiotic. Amoxicillin, once you are improving, means light exercise is fine. Azithromycin: rest (QT risk). Fluoroquinolones (ciprofloxacin, levofloxacin): NO impact sport during the course or for 4 weeks afterwards — risk of tendinopathy and rupture.
Are antihistamines a problem for cycling?
The non-sedating ones (loratadine, bilastine, desloratadine) are fine. Cetirizine can cause mild drowsiness, and it varies. First generation (chlorphenamine, diphenhydramine): avoid them — the sedation makes them dangerous on the road.
Is salbutamol on the WADA list?
Yes. Above 1600 micrograms in 24 hours it is prohibited. A registered competitor with exercise-induced asthma needs a TUE (Therapeutic Use Exemption). At ordinary therapeutic doses it is generally permitted.
Can I lift weights on a statin?
Yes. Statins are fine alongside moderate aerobic and resistance training. Watch for unexplained muscle pain — ask for a CK test if you get severe muscle pain with no obvious cause (rare risk of rhabdomyolysis).
